Carolyn Bertozzi elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Carolyn Bertozzi

Recognized by NAE for “engineering tools using bio-orthogonal chemistry for novel biomaterials, diagnostics, and drug delivery systems,” Carolyn Bertozzi, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences and the Baker Family Director of Sarafan ChEM-H, was amongst five Stanford Faculty elected to the 2024 class of the National Academy of Engineering, which is one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to engineers. Having previously been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2005, Professor Bertozzi joins Professor Khosla (National Academy of Engineering, 2009; National Academy of Sciences, 2020) in these ranks.

Bertozzi's research spans the disciplines of chemistry and biology with an emphasis on studies of cell surface sugars important to human health and disease. Her research group profiles changes in cell surface glycosylation associated with cancer, inflammation, and bacterial infection. Bertozzi and her lab use this information to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, most recently in immuno-oncology.
