Stauffer Lecture Series
About the John Stauffer Lecturer Series: In 1993, Stanford University received generous support from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust to endow an annual lecture series in the Department of Chemistry to attract nationally and internationally recognized scientists and bring scholars from the university and the surrounding area to campus.
John Stauffer was born in California in 1898 to German immigrant parents. Throughout his childhood, Mr. Stauffer lived in an atmosphere that accorded high regard and respect for education and learning. He assisted his father and uncle with the rise of the Stauffer Chemical Company from the shores of the San Francisco Bay, and helped bring the company to international prominence. At his death in 1972, Mr. Stauffer was executive vice-president and director emeritus of the Stauffer Chemical Company. He served on the Board of Trustees at Stanford University, the University of Southern California, and Whittier College. The gift to establish the John Stauffer Endowed Lectureship Fund was made by the John Stauffer Charitable Trust in accordance with Mr. Stauffer’s great respect for education and his belief in the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors.
