Integrated Lab–Lecture Experiences

Ben Binhong Lin, Stanford University

Chemistry is an experimental science; therefore, our department believes in getting students hands-on experience with experimental techniques and key chemical phenomena as soon as possible! In order to best learn from these key phenomena, we have found that integrating early lab experiences with the relevant lecture material is critical to building student intuition in science.

By linking lab experiences to a carefully planned sequence of courses, students are able to build and practice key skills as they need them, gain exposure to different types of instrumentation, and truly understand the chemistry behind the experiment rather than just following “cook book” type recipe labs. Indeed, a number of studies on this format have found that student performance and retention is improved by concurrent enrollment in lab and lecture (Matz, 2012).
