The Department of Chemistry extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Sharon Brauman for her generous contribution in establishing The John I. Brauman Visiting Scholar Fund, an endowment honoring the life and legacy of a distinguished scientist, beloved mentor, and esteemed member of our faculty.

John Brauman’s outstanding reputation as a distinguished scientist, mentor, and catalyst for collaboration earned him numerous awards, including the National Medal of Science in 2002. He is recognized by his peers as a warm and wise educator who attracted many others to the department over the course of his 50-plus years at Stanford. Celebrating a life in chemistry, the fund honors John’s collaborative spirit while advancing a key departmental priority of introducing new research perspectives by convening top chemical talent.

Through his groundbreaking scientific contributions, profound mentorship, and leadership in both academia and the broader scientific community, John will always be remembered as an extraordinary individual whose influence continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The establishment of this endowment ensures that Brauman Visiting Scholars selected by the Department of Chemistry can continue their academic research pursuits during their time at Stanford, while offering our faculty and department the opportunity to engage with outstanding early- and mid-career scientists.

Being named a Brauman Visiting Scholar would be a prestigious honor and a hallmark of exceptional potential in the chemical sciences.

Building on this initial gift, the Department of Chemistry is raising additional funding to ensure the long‑term sustainability of this initiative. Beyond his scientific distinction, John had a remarkable ability to bring people together and transform ideas into action—making this fund a fitting tribute to his legacy of partnership and discovery.

As Professor Brauman reflected in a 2013 oral history conducted by Susan Schofield at the Stanford Historical Society: “...there’s no doubt in my mind that my scientific successes, if you want to call them that, are very related to being at an institution that both had the resources and qualities that made it possible for these things to happen - colleagues, students, physical resources, reputation, whatever you want to say, and I really am immensely grateful to the place for providing me with the opportunity to do what I did….So, I think it matters that I was at Stanford.”
