Graduate student Rain Mariano recognized as recipient of 2018 DARE fellowship

Chemistry Ph.D. student Rain Mariano was recognized at the DARE (Diversifying Academia, Recruiting Excellence) Fellowship Welcome Reception on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 as a 2018 DARE Fellow.

The DARE Doctoral Fellowship Program awards two-year fellowships to advanced Stanford doctoral students who want to investigate and prepare for academic careers and whose presence will help diversify the professoriate. The DARE program's objectives are to better prepare students from diverse backgrounds for academic careers and to have them, at the same time, enrich the educational experiences of others. Thus, the program expands the academic “pipeline” in two ways. DARE was initially created as a four-year pilot program for three cohorts of students on two-year fellowships. The first cohort of DARE Fellows was selected in Spring 2008. The program has since been extended to support 13 cohorts of students.

Originally from the Philippines, Rain Mariano is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford. His doctoral research has focused on using nanoscale electron diffraction and electrochemical microscopy to develop structure-activity relationships relevant to CO2 and CO electroreduction catalysts. Rain has served as an Outreach Coordinator for the Chemistry department, organizing lab-in-a-box trips to render Chemistry and college more approachable for high school students. Prior to Stanford, Rain completed a BS in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas and led Chemistry outreach programs for K-12 students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
