Department Statement on George Floyd
Dear Chemistry Community,
We are deeply saddened and disheartened by the senseless loss of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Sean Reed. We bore witness to the tragic loss of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. This is against the very fabric of our humanity. We affirm that Stanford University does not tolerate any hateful speech, images, or other acts of intolerance, as we seek to continue to build a safe and inclusive community in person and online. We urge you to please take care of yourselves and each other during this challenging time.
We acknowledge the brutality that oppresses Black communities and all communities. The systemic issues of racism, inequality and injustice deeply rooted in history are against our values as a department and a university.
We stand with you and ask all to join in as we seek racial justice for the lives lost in such horrific and senseless ways. We must seek social justice for all communities.
Now is the time that we need each other more than ever. Please know that you are not alone. We are a community. Please seek the support of our community, talk to one another during this time and reach out to the Faculty Staff Help Center, CAPS and additional resources as needed.
As leaders, we want you to be assured that our department stands with all of you-as an ally-in this time of sadness and grief. We stand by the recent statements of Provost Persis Drell, Debra Satz and Stacey Bent.
In support and solidarity,
Keith Hodgson (Department Chair), Elizabeth Dahlen (Department Director of Finance and Operations), Steven Boxer (incoming Department Chair)
